Planting candy cane seeds

Looking for a unique Christmas tradition for your family? How about planting candy cane seeds? It is a family favorite in our home, and I’m pretty sure none of your friends are doing this one! You might want to hold off telling anyone about this until after Christmas is over though, or else they might steal the idea because it’s ‘so cute.’

Items needed:

candy cane peppermint candy

  • Candy cane
  • Peppermint (starlight) candy
  • Spoon (or other small digging device for a child)
  • ‘Magic’ Santa dust (colored granulated sugar works well)
  • Story-telling ability

This activity will take about 5 minutes to complete, but your children will love it (and you’ll love how happy they are the next morning). On Christmas Eve, give each child a ‘candy cane seed’ (peppermint candy) and a spoon. Take them outside and let them plant the candy cane seed in the snow, or the dirt if you’re not lucky enough to have snow. Next, let them sprinkle some of the magic Santa dust over each seed. Make sure to mention that the dust is magic, and that it only works on Christmas Eve. We tell our boys that Santa leaves us the dust each year for use the following year.

And now for the magic… After the children fall asleep, replace the peppermint candy ‘seeds’ with the candy canes to create the illusion that the seeds grew overnight.

Tip: You might want to leave the wrapper on the candy canes, because the colors tend to bleed into the snow if the wrapper is removed.

On Christmas morning, our boys always run right to the window to find out if their candy cane seeds grew while they were in bed. It’s a wonderful holiday tradition that is simple to perform, but provides many warm memories.

I hope it works as well for you as it does for us.

Happy holidays!

Favorite song today

The song I’ve been listening to all day is Bubbly by Colbie Caillat. I first heard this song on MySpace a few months ago, and then downloaded it a the free single of the week on iTunes. I highly recommend this song… it’s very catchy! It took me a while to appreciate it, but Bubbly has really grown on me. I find myself putting iTunes on repeat and listening to this song over and over.

Pain is weakness leaving the body (a birthday message)

MarineHappy birthday to the United States Marine Corps. On November 10, 1775 a resolution by the Second Continental Congress called for two battalions of Marines to be raised. From this resolution, our current Marine Corps was founded. Since then, the Corps has established itself as one of the preeminent fighting forces in the world today. Throughout its storied history, the Marine Corps has engaged in many famous battles, such as Tripoli, Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, and the Chosin Reservoir. In these battles, Marines have acted with courage and valor – building the well-earned reputation the Corps holds today.

The roll call is long and distinguished. What Marine hasn’t heard stories of Chesty Puller, Dan Daly, Smedley Butler, Archibald Henderson, John Basilone or John A. Lejeune? These legendary Marines are the past that the Corps’ future is built upon. And all Marines, past and present, belong to that brotherhood that has been forged by the honor, courage, and committment of its chosen few.

Today, as I pause and reflect upon the great contributions that have been made by those who have worn the Marine Corps uniform, I offer congratulations on 232 proud years of service. And to those Marines serving today, I offer my traditional toast:

May your coffin be made of one-hundred year-old oak. And may the tree that oak comes from be planted tomorrow.

What Marine Corps boot camp is like…

Have you ever been curious about what Marine Corps boot camp is really like? This video shows it fairly well. When people have asked me about boot camp, I’ve always told them that it was like Full Metal Jacket – except I had five drill instructors instead of just one. I didn’t create this video… you can find it on YouTube. And although the video says this happened at Parris Island, the comments on the main page seem to indicate that it might have been at MCRD San Diego. It doesn’t really matter where this video was taken – Marines will tell you that the training, and the viciousness of the drill instructors, are the same at either location.
